Symbol

Definition:  An object, person or idea used in the poem to stand for or suggest something else with which it is associated.

Example:  I knew the language of the floweret;

                  "My fragile leaves," it said," his heart enclose."

                   Love long has taken for his amulet

                   One perfect rose.
